Caribou Hunts - Schefferville, Quebec

Alex Gouthro worked with outfitter Club Montagnais to provide quality fly-in caribou hunts for clients for over 12 years, and these hunts are still available for interested hunters.  Hunters first fly from Montreal to Schefferville, Quebec and from there hunt parties fly into one of the outpost camps operated by their chosen outfitter; some of these camps can be as far as 150 miles from Schefferville.    This is a wonderful fly-in wilderness experience.

While the actual caribou hunting season is much longer, the majority of  hunts (both gun and bow) take place between August 15 and September 30, when both the George River and Leaf River herds are on their migratory runs.  While migratory movements vary from year to year, there is an excellent chance that hunters will contact caribou during this period, and outfitters do their best to make sure this happens.  This is a great time to be in caribou country.

Outposts Camps

Outfitters generally have two different types of camps available for clients:

Camp Jamin Welcome
Permanent Camps   These camps are structured from wood and are heated with propane heaters or wood stoves. These camps are larger and have a kitchen, dining room, running water, toilets, showers, and a meat shelter for hanging your caribou meat.  Clients have separate quarters for sleeping, and there are boats, motors, and gas available for client use.

Mobile Camps  These camps are rustic, but comfortable. They are made from heavy duty canvas with wooden floors and half wooden walls.  They are heated by wood stoves. There is a kitchen fully equipped to do your own meals, and a meat shelter for your meat.  There are boats, motors, and gas available for client use.

Caribou Hunt Information

Schefferville is widely known as the Caribou Capital of the world.  This region of Northern Quebec has topped all other areas for decades by producing thousands of animals for its hunters, with many sets of antlers making the Pope & Young and Boone & Crocket books.  Hunters hunt the converging herds of caribou from both the George River Herd  (largest) & the Leaf River Herd.

On your arrival in Schefferville your outfitter or his/her representative will be at the airport to meet you.  Because of weather conditions in that part of the country, do not travel on tight schedule . With the possibility of bad weather, be prepared to spend extra days either at the camp or in Schefferville when floatplanes cannot fly.  Extra days in hunt camp on account of bad weather will be at the outfitter's expense.  Should there be extra days in Schefferville due to bad weather, outfitters generally will provide sleeping accommodations but meals will be at the hunter's expense - but this is something you should find out about before booking your hunt.  On any overnight stay in Schefferville related to the hunt, hunter's meat will normally be stored free of charge in a meat cooler house.

The package rate on caribou hunting trips includes the possibility for fishing, and hunting bear and small game.  Licenses for these activities are extra and must be purchased in Schefferville before going into bush

Hunt Packages & Costs:  The rates for caribou hunts depend on whether the hunter chooses an European Plan Hunt or an American Plan Hunt.  All hunt packages normally include free fly-out of caribou harvested, with some restrictions on antlers, as described in the hunt packages.
